$570 million contract boosts mining operations for Theiss

A WHOPPING $570 million contract will result in mine operator Thiess ramping up its work at Wesfarmers' Curragh North mine in Central Queensland.

The contract has been extended for another four years.

Thiess has a pair of contracts at the operation, 30km north of Blackwater, with one covering its dragline and mega-machines and the other relating to clearing the dirt that covers the coal and mining operations.

The latter contract will now have more fleets of machinery operating, although the company is yet to reveal how many extra jobs will be created.

The deal was due to expire early next year but will now run until 2018.

Thiess operates five coal mines in Central Queensland and one - the Meandu Mine - near Kingaroy.
