90th celebrations for Gympie girl guides groups

TO KICK start the 90th anniversary of Guiding in Gympie, the Gympie Gumnut Guides enjoyed an afternoon meeting out and about.

The girls discovered some of the heritage buildings in the former gold mining town.

All the girls had a great time following the heritage trail, spotting the heritage signs and reading about some of the history at each of the stops.

Some of the buildings they visited weren't even standing when Girl Guides commenced in Gympie in August of 1926.

Special events marking the landmark anniversary of the Guides in Gympie will continue throughout August and into September.

A number of the leaders and Rangers from Gympie District gave up their Sunday morning on July 31 to attend First Aid and CPR refresher training at the local Guide hut.

Laurie Roberts from Initial Response and Safety shared some great tips on keeping safe as first aiders as well as putting the group through their paces using the defibrillator, CPR mannequin and other first aid equipment.

Jenny Mirto, Unit Leader for the Gympie Gumnut Guides and the Gympie Girl Guides said the refresher course was vital.

"Making sure our First Aid and CPR qualifications are up to date are an important part of the responsibilities as a Guide leader,” Ms Mirto said.
