Ipswich killer, rapist’s fate in court’s hands

A COURT will determine whether a convicted Ipswich killer and rapist should stay in jail or whether he could be released under strict conditions.

Under dangerous prisoner laws, the Attorney-General can impose strict conditions on dangerous offenders or apply to the Supreme Court to extend their detention.

Later this year Brisbane Supreme Court will hear whether Mark Richard Lawrence could be released.

Lawrence has been behind bars for more than 30 years after he killed a fellow patient at the Wolston Park Hospital while he was an involuntary patient in 1983.

He also raped a fellow prisoner in October 1999.

His case was briefly mentioned at Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday.

It was adjourned until November 16 when a full hearing about whether Lawrence should be released from jail will be held. - APN NEWSDESK
