Julian Wilson takes a breather ahead of Quiksilver Pro
FORMER world No.5 Robbie Sherwell has backed Julian Wilson's decision not to contest the opening qualifying events of 2015.
Wilson, who has taken out the Sports Star of the Month award for December on the back of his sterling Triple Crown victory in Hawaii, has opted to wait until next month's Quiksilver Pro to hit the water competitively.
Sherwell believes it is a good move by Wilson considering the Coolum ace's demanding 2014 season.
"After the stress of last year I think it is a good thing for him to take a break, but I don't know how Julian is feeling and I don't know his circumstances," Sherwell said.
"He will come back to the first round (of the World Championship Tour) with the realisation that he has won one of the biggest contests in the world (the Triple Crown)."
Wilson secured the crown when he won the Billabong Pipe Masters last month, following a second in the Reef Hawaiian Pro and a 12th in the Vans World Cup of Surfing.
He had to win at Pipeline to secure the Triple Crown and did so by defeating 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina in the final by 0.43 of a point.
The win pushed Wilson to fifth in the qualifying standings and ensured him a place in the 2015 WCT.
