Ace High makes Randwick Guineas

TRAINER David Payne breathed a sigh of relief after his outstanding colt Ace High was finally included among entries for the Group 1 $1 million Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.

Payne had submitted an entry for Ace High but due to a technical hitch, the colt's name did not appear when Guineas nominations closed at 11am.

But there were only 15 original entries which meant the Randwick Guineas was reopened, ensuring Ace High could be included.

"I don't know what happened,'' Payne said. "I put my entries in and Ace High was among them but somehow his name didn't show up.

"We noticed it straight away and fortunately we could get it fixed.''

Ace High, dual Group 1 winner of the Spring Champion Stakes and Victoria Derby, has been competitive in the Expressway Stakes (1200m) and Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in his two runs back this autumn and is getting out to his preferred distance range on Saturday.

"He will only get better as he gets further and it's Randwick so it's a tough 1600m," Payne said. "He is building up well."

Payne revealed he is leaning more towards aiming Ace High at the $2 million ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 7 after flirting with setting the colt for a possible showdown with Winx in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 14.

"On what we saw of Winx last Saturday (seven lengths win in the Chipping Norton Stakes) I don't think we will be taking her on,'' Payne said. "We are looking more at the Derby now.''

Ace High is at $11 in opening TAB Fixed Odds betting for a star-studded Royal Randwick Guineas where Hobartville Stakes winner Kementari is the $2.25 favourite ahead of D'Argento ($4), Pierata ($6) and Trapeze Artist ($8).

Global Glamour is early favourite at $5 for the other Group 1, the Canterbury Stakes (1300m), while The Everest winner Redzel is at $1.50 for the Challenge Stakes (1000m).
