Adam Gilchrist starts motoring life in a Kombi

RENOWNED for his aggression on the pitch, former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist had a relatively subdued start to his motoring life.

What was your first car?

My first car was a Ford Telstar. I'm guessing a late '80s model. It was metallic blue and I borrowed the $3000 from my grandfather to buy it.

Each fortnight I would drive to his house and make a repayment, at which time he would write out a receipt and stamp it with a stamp similar to those a bank teller uses.

The feature of the car was the eagle stickers on either side next to the front tyres. He was duly named Eddy the Eagle, in honour of the great British downhill skier, as the car was about as graceful.

What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?

Currently driving an Audi S5 which I love. I am fortunate to have driven Audis for about 10 years and never been disappointed.

What cars did your family have while you were growing up?

We grew up in Kombis. A mid '60s white (with red seating upholstery), then a pale blue early '70s, followed by the '76 bright orange number, complete with smiley face and spare tyre cover on the front. Embarrassing stuff as a child, but cool in this day and age.

We are currently having my wife's old family Kombi done up and intend to complete the family Nullarbor crossing sometime in 2014.

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

I think I'm a pretty chilled driver. The most difficult thing to do while driving with the family is to listen to all the kids' stories at once and also appease each of their music tastes.

Constant shuffling through radio stations makes concentrating on the road a challenge!

Do you have any preferred driving music?

See above. I have no say in it at all.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?

Damien Fleming, my fellow commentator on Network Ten's Big Bash coverage. He is one of the funniest blokes around and has a great knowledge of music, so that would keep it entertaining. Be nice to have Ron Burgundy on board as well, for thorough and accurate news updates!

What is your dream car?

One with air-con and a trusting fuel gauge. While running out of petrol is a rite of passage and something we should all experience, it's not a habit you want to get into.
