Cooloola Comets lose two matches by one-point
IT was a case of what could have been for the Cooloola Comets on the weekend, as the local representative side continues to have mixed results in the Regional Basketball League.
After a win and two losses in round one in August, the Comets had to deal with the untimely withdrawal of several key players due to unavailability when they travelled to Dalby for round two.
It was a tough first-up match on Saturday morning for them, with the undefeated competition leaders, Hervey Bay Hurricanes, showing their class to come away with a 61-34 victory.
Cooloola hit their straps in the next match though, scoring a confidence boosting five-point win over home-town heroes Dalby Power.
While the win lifted the Comets' sprits, they found themselves down by 18 points at three quarter time in their next match against Tenterfield Terriers.
They dug deep though to level the scores with just seconds on the clock, but the spirited fightback was cut short when a controversial foul gifted the deciding point to Tenterfield, who took the 51-50 win as an attempted buzzer-beater fell short for Cooloola.
The Comets had a shot at redemption on Sunday when they took to the court for the final match against the Amazing Clean Beavers.
It was more heartache though for the brave Comets, with their second consecutive one-point loss leaving the players to rue missed opportunities.
The 42-41 win for the Beavers leaves them in second position on the ladder behind the Hurricanes, who have now won seven straight matches.
The Comets are in fourth spot.
Round three will be played in Toowoomba on the weekend of October 25.
