COFFS Harbour has been the training ground of the Wallabies and Matildas and now it lays claim to a new national sporting team, the Australian Men's Netball team The Sonix.

The 10-man squad staged a training session at Sportz Central at the weekend and is looking to establish its training base on the Coffs Coast as the team prepares for the inaugural Men's and Mixed Netball World Cup in Sun City, South Africa in October.

"So many people are yet to hear about the Sonix and a lot of people aren't even aware of men's and mixed netball in Australia," Sonix team manager Angela Brose said.

"It's great to get broader awareness of the team and we are so keen to arrange further trips to Coffs Harbour where everyone was really receptive at the weekend.

"Coffs is a great location for us to train given it's the halfway point between Sydney and Brisbane where most of the squad are based.

"We hope to see spectators come along and take in our next training weekend at Bishop Druitt College on September 15, which will be the last training session we will have before we fly out for South Africa."

The Australian men's netball team was founded in 1990.

In recent years the Sonix have enjoyed domination over New Zealand and South Africa in the Tri-Nations Cup series and is likely to feature among the favourites for the inaugural Men's and Mixed World Cup, contested by 12 nations.

Entirely self-funded the Sonix, representing the Australian Mens and Mixed Netball Association, are on a drive to secure sponsors who can assist with the team's travel costs.
