Baby Asha to return to Nauru after community detention

A ONE-year-old baby girl will be returned to Nauru, despite a community campaign against her return to offshore detention.

The girl, known as Asha, was accidentally burned on Nauru.

She was removed from Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane early Monday morning, after the government told doctors at the hospital she was being put in community detention.

Doctors had previously refused to release her on medical grounds after Asha was accidentally burned on Nauru.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said she was in community detention and she and her family would be returned to Nauru as soon as she was able.

But he said his department would be assessing the family's case to stay in the community before a final decision was made.

Mr Dutton said there were 83 other offshore detainees who had been moved to community detention, but they would need to be ultimately resettled outside of Australia.
