Bakery creates 'crazy' hot cross bun flavours

LEMON meringue pie might be a traditional dessert but this year the Old Fernvale Bakery will turn it into a hot cross bun flavour for charity.

This Easter marks the third year the popular bakery has gotten behind Queensland Children's Hospital, raising funds through its hot cross bun sales.

To continue its tradition of marvellous creations, the bakers have listed more than 30 individual flavours, which will be released across the next three to four weeks.

The lemon meringue flavour will make its return as a humble hot cross bun flavour following its popularity last year.

Pastry chef Brad Gordon said the flavour list was a collaboration between all the bakers "tossing ideas" around the kitchen.

"We just throw ideas around, some are really crazy," he said.

Last year, the bakery raised almost $30,000 for the hospital, with $1 from every packet of hot cross buns going towards the charity.

Bakery owner Bill Rose said the more people he met, the more he realised how vital it was to support the hospital.

"It has become closer to us because of all the people we know and their children that end up going to the hospital," Mr Rose said.

"Our own grandson went there about six months ago ... one of our employee's children was there the other day."

He said not only did the hospital care for children, but it also supported others such as Ipswich Hospital with various equipment.

Mr Rose is confident he can surpass last year's fundraising efforts with the help of his esteemed bakers.

The Old Fernvale Bakery's fundraising campaign kicked off on Monday with its first 10 hot cross bun flavours.

Mr Rose said in the lead up to Easter, customers were welcome to order flavours they had tried, even if they were not being baked specifically that week.

The fundraiser will run until Easter.
