Banana growers reassured project here to help

IT'S enough to send anyone bananas.

The national Bunchy Top Project is out to ensure banana growers, both commercial growers and home gardeners, that they're there to help and not hinder.

Inspectors say they're working to rid Australia of Banana Bunchy Top Virus, which strikes banana plants, and not stop people from growing their own bananas which has been the perception with some people.

"We have had some people express concerns that we are seeking to reduce the amount of bananas grown in backyards, but that is not true," project manager David Peasley said.

Plant inspectors are stationed in south-east Queensland and northern NSW - the only areas in Australia affected - to search for banana plants infected with BBTV as part of their efforts to safeguard local bananas.

Free inspections can be organised in hobby farms or backyards if people suspect their banana plants are infected. Phone 1800 068 371.
