Best spots to hook 'em in choppy weather

CONDITIONS will be a bit choppy still today with winds south to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres.

The weekend will be great weather but is looking okay but with choppy southerly to south easterly conditions in the 10 to 20 knot range. Local kayak angler Warren Norup has fished Sunshine Reef again this week separate occasions for three quality spanish mackerel, in the 11kg to 132cm /14.2kg size range on a trolled bonito.

Big snapper on Sunshine and North Reef on pilly floaters down the burley trail the biggest one went 82cm as well as coral trout, spanish mackerel, yellow tail kingfish and grass sweetlip and also a few cobia.

Out and around Hervey Bay

TAILOR and great fun on golden trevally this week on the the flats and in the deeper water and school mackerel in some of the deeper channels off River Heads and in the Strait. The cold snap has a few good keeper snapper feeding, as well as cobia, mackerel, the odd coral trout and a few and squid being taken on the inshore reefs.

Bream and chopper tailor in the lower reaches of the Burrum River and a few sand crabs to be taken around Burrum Heads and Woodgate areas. Great Sandy Strait is producing good catches of whiting, flathead and plenty of quality bream showing up throughout.

The winter whiting numbers are increasing and they are starting to congregate in schools so try around Gatakers Bay, towards Toogoom and around the Woody islands. There's good bream at night, trevally and squid off Urangan Jetty. For more information on fishing the Bay check out the Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing facebook page.

Estuaries and beaches

FRASER Island: As the seas have settled down there are some great gutters and deeper holes forming along the beach. Target dart, whiting, bream, chopper tailor and quality jew moving through the gutters at night along the eastern beach. You still need to be cautious travelling around the rocky outcrops along the Eastern Beach.

On the western side of Fraser Island there's been plenty of whiting and catches of flathead and trevally, while in the creeks and the flats there's a few good grunter bream, flathead still a few mud crab and the promise of a few sand crabs on offer.

Rainbow Beach: Remember, the 2018 Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic and Expo is on from July 20-28. The jew have been moving through the gutters particularly at night and try for chopper tailor at dawn and dusk and go for flathead, dart, whiting in the gutters through the day at Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point and Teewah Beach.

A few good whiting, bream and dart up the beach and around Inskip Point. Tin Can Bay is fishing well for a few chopper tailor whiting, plenty of good bream, flathead, sand crabs trevally and still getting a few good muddies.
