Birdman comes home to roost at the Oscars
BIRDMAN was named Best Picture of the past year at today's Oscars.
The 87th Academy Awards, held in Los Angeles, honour the best in the film industry and are considered the most prestigious awards for actors and filmmakers.
Birdman's Alejandro G Inarritu was also named Best Director.
"Ego loves competition, so for someone to win someone has to lose," he said.
"True art… can't be compared. It can't be labelled and these (other) films can't be defeated because they exist. Our work will be judged as always by time."
Birdman tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel for the most awards of the night, four.
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel was recognised for its score, costumes, make-up and production design.
Australians Tim Crosbie and David Lee missed out on awards for their work in special effects and sound mixing respectively.
But Naomi Watts was able to celebrate though as part of the Birdman cast.
After winning Golden Globes and SAG Awards, Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne were the favourites to win the best actor categories.
Both actors dedicated their awards to the people suffering from the illnesses they portrayed.
Redmayne, who portrayed Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, dedicated his award to ALS sufferers while Moore dedicated hers to those with Alzheimer's.
"So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalised," Moore said.
"People with Alzheimer's deserve to be seen so we can find a cure."
Neil Patrick Harris hosted the awards.
