The Blacklist's Ryan Eggold on his revolutionary new show

THE SWEEPING mini-series Sons of Liberty casts America's Founding Fathers in a new light.

The three-part, six-hour drama follows the lives of young Boston radicals Sam Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere and Dr Joseph Warren in the years leading up to America's Revolutionary War.

Chronicles of Narnia star Ben Barnes plays central figure Sam Adams, who isn't a model citizen but is still seen as a natural leader by many of his Boston compatriots.

Breaking Bad's Dean Norris plays diplomat and inventor Benjamin Franklin while Ryan Eggold plays Dr Warren, who famously sent Revere and William Dawes to spread the alarm that the British garrison in Boston was about to raid the town of Concord, leading to the first engagement of the war.

The History Channel-commissioned series was a nice sea change for Eggold, who is best known for his mysterious role in the crime thriller The Blacklist.

"I had a good time working on Liberty," he tells APN.

"We shot in Romania for three months, which was an interesting experience. I got to travel a bit and I got to ride horses, which was great.

"When I was (in Australia for) the Melbourne Cup I just wanted to hop on one of the horses (laughs)."

Wearing historically accurate wool costumes was a challenge at times for the actors during the European summer, says Eggold.

"It was really hot," he says.

"We were wearing three or four layers of wool, wigs, hats and carrying muskets.

"It was a big production. I'd never done a period drama, so I was excited about exploring that time period."

He was also impressed by the lengths to which production designer Rob Gray went to recreate colonial Boston.

"The set was incredible," he says.

"They built Boston from the early 1770s. I was blown away by how realistic it was and how large it was."

Sons of Liberty debuts on SBS 1 on Thursday February 5 at 9.30pm.
