BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is practicality in sleek skin

NICHES within niches have become commonplace for the premium brands.

They are answering questions no one ever asked.

But buyers are responding, embracing the various model lines and the copious options that are available to create bespoke vehicles.

BMW has been leading the charge with a swag of new offerings, and will continue its product onslaught in June with the arrival of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe starting from $70K.

It will complement the 4 Series family, which was recently launched in two-door coupe and convertible derivatives.

This continues the brand's shift in naming convention, where coupes and convertibles wear even numbers. Odds are restricted to sedans, wagons and hatches.

According to BMW Group Australia managing director Phil Horton, this new offering will appeal to a wider audience.

"The Gran Coupe variant adds more functionality to the BMW 4 Series without compromising any of the aesthetics or driving enjoyment of the vehicle," he said.

"And in line with BMW's strategic product direction, the additional functionality will not come at a premium. The 4 Series Gran Coupe will be similarly equipped and identically priced to the equivalent two-door Coupe models."

Boasting nearly identical exterior dimensions to its two-door stablemate, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is 4638mm in length, 1825mm wide and shares the same wheelbase and track of the Coupe.

The major difference between the Coupe and the Gran Coupe lies in the roofline, which sits 12mm higher and extends a further 112mm towards the rear of the car.

The two frameless rear doors of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offer better access to the 2+1 rear bench seat and the increased height and length of the roof allows for greater rear passenger headroom and improved comfort.

Added to this is the 35-litre increase in luggage space, now 480 litres of room - up to 1300 litres with the standard 40-20-40 split fold rear seats folded down - which provides more convenience for everyday commuting.

The line-up is identical to the two-door range.

The 420i is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating 135kW and 270Nm, consuming on average 6.1 litres/100km and reaching 0-100kmh in 7.6 seconds.

Powered by a four-cylinder turbo diesel, the 420d achieves 135kW and 380Nm with a 0-100kmh sprint time of 7.5 seconds. It's average fuel consumption is a claimed 4.6 litres/100km.

Next up the rankings is the 428i, which has a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 180kW and 350Nm, which sips 6.4 litres/100km but can reach 0-100 km in six seconds flat.

Sitting atop the range is the 435i, which features a turbocharged six-cylinder pumping out 225kW and 400Nm, which can propel it from 0-100kmh in 5.2 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 7.6 litres/100km.
