Bonus points again for Gold
THE Stirling Homes Gympie Gold XI has scored double bonus points for the second week in a row, after a stunning bowling performance by Joel Kennedy kept Maroochydore Red struggling for runs.
Kennedy took four for 16 at Albert Park on Saturday, stopping Maroochydore's batsmen in their tracks.
Gympie stepped on to a batsmen friendly pitch after winning the toss, with opener Ashley Sippel taking full advantage of the surface to make a half century.
Gympie player Lewis Waugh said the team had already scored runs and lost only two wickets after the first 17 overs.
"It is always good to put runs on the board - I believe batting is our strength."
Gympie lost a few easy wickets in the middle order but Trevor Brady and Waugh kept Gold's momentum going with about 30 runs each.
Gympie batsman Danny Shepperson contributed another 48 not out to put Gympie in front with a strong run rate for Maroochydore to chase.
"Good partnerships at the back end of the innings gave us a competitive lead of 277."
Gympie backed up its top batting performance with equally strong bowling and fielding. Anthony Reid took two wickets early in the innings with Kennedy finishing off most of the tail end, making 4/16.
"All the bowlers bowled into really good areas.
"Our fielding was good too - we got a couple of run outs and all catches were taken.
"It was an all-round good team effort - we backed our ability," Waugh said.
Scoring double points (through doubling the oppositions score) for the second week in a row will strengthen Gympie's position, now second on the ladder but, they have a long weekend ahead.
The A-grade side will play in a double-header with two separate one-day matches on Saturday and Sunday.
Although all Sunshine Coast teams will be in the same boat this weekend, Gympie has to travel to Caboolture Saturday to play fourth place Snakes on their home turf.
Then on Sunday, they play the Glasshouse Rangers who defeated them in the Caloundra Events Centre T20 grand final last Tuesday and are sitting just below the Gold on the ladder, in third.
"To play them both in one weekend is a bit tough.
"If we win both it will hold us in good stead for the final," Waugh said.
