Boot camp looms for young offenders
YOUNG Gympie offenders could find themselves in boot camp, with the opening of a trial facility on the Fraser Coast.
The early intervention boot camp, designed to challenge the attitudes of potential young offenders, began on the Coast Tuesday and will run on a trial basis for the next two years.
Boot camp participants can be referred to the program by government departments or family members by contacting local police, youth justice service centre or school.
At the announcement of the government-funded camp in March of this year, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the Fraser Coast had been selected due to the increasing number of young people being given probation orders and community service orders.
Youth in the Gympie region will be included in the camp's reach.
Other early intervention youth boot camps have been established in Rockhampton and the on the Gold Coast.
The trial location is expected to involve at least 40 young people over the two years.
