Brady century helps Gold press claims for finals berth

CRICKET: Gympie's bid for a semifinals position in division one Sunshine Coast fixtures strengthened as the Gold has already forced Caloundra to follow on at Henzell Park, while rivals Maroochydore and Glasshouse engage in a dour battle at Kev Hackney Oval.

Without the services of their leading runscorers, Lewis Waugh and Josh Brady, Gympie faced a severe test of depth in a must win game against the Lighthouses, and opener Steve Brady answered the call. A nemesis for Caloundra, in 2010 Brady pounded the Lighthouses for 177, the highest local one-day innings, and progressed to 254, the second highest individual total ever, in the last round of 2013-14.

This time his batting was more sedate, 102 from 122 deliveries, just three sixes supplementing 14 fours, on the way passing a personal milestone of 5,000 runs in Division 1. Coming back from what was potentially a career ending injury at the beginning of last season, Brady pushed the visitors to 222, slowed all the way by the wiles of Jack Cockram, whose 5/78 averted a looming huge target for his side.

Cockram's efforts were of little avail after Brycen Mitchell had Tony Andrews caught third ball, then Andre Cave bowled Damien Evans in his second over for 2/11. The double act continued with wickets on the last delivery of the seventh over and the first ball of the eighth to wreck the innings at 4/26, the downhill slide resisted only marginally by Cockram's 26 to halt at 79 all out when Ash Sippel completed a cameo of 4/14 from his seven overs.

The visitors retained momentum by asking the Lighthouses to follow on and closed the day with Caloundra 1/7, still 136 runs from making Gympie bat again with a big task to avoid outright defeat.

Yandina gave Nambour's faint hopes of finals contention a reality check by raising 208, the Pioneers' season high, on Thorogood Oval. Peter Walker's 51 plus add-ons from Brandon Coleman and Jack Whisker thwarted the Cutters' plan for a much lesser target on the way to outright points, with Ash Renouf's 4/22 best for the visitors. Now Nambour will need to concentrate on the innings at hand after closing the day at 1/30.

Maroochydore batted 96 overs for 6/189 on Kev Hackney Oval as the Swans-Rangers clash developed serious overtones for any loser, with Gympie's progress at Caloundra in mind. Callum Stitt, 47, and James Chaplin, 58, faced 305 deliveries between them to set up the innings at 1/137 after Zak Willox went early, but the funereal pace continued, ensuring the Swans, third on the ladder, bat on against their third-placed opponents when play resumes next Saturday.

With the Gold likely to achieve maximum points, a draw would land Gympie right up with Maroochydore and Glasshouse on the ladder, putting the Swans, who face Caboolture in round 14, in most danger. But the home side ploy may be based on the Rangers' inconsistent batting returns, only passing 200 once in five first 2D innings this season, and that was after Jeremy Schultz contributed 202.

There was no play at Tewantin-Noosa in the home side's clash with Caboolture after a damaged sightscreen was ruled to pose a safety threat.
