BUNDY FATAL: Police investigate if speed caused horror crash
UPDATE 1PM: Police are investigating if speed was a factor in a single-vehicle crash that killed a Burnett Heads teenager.
Bundaberg Patrol Group Acting Inspector Michael Bishop said the 19-year-old man died after his Madza sedan hit a tree along Mittelheusers Rd at Mon Repos just before midnight.
"Approximately 11.35pm on Sunday evening police were alerted by members of the public to a serious traffic crash on Mittelheusers Rd," he said.
"Subsequent enquires have revealed that the driver, and sole occupant of that vehicle, was deceased.
"There is a number of causal factors under investigation and we're in the infancy of trying to search through those now.
"The road conditions were slightly wet however other than that we're still looking at what potential causes led to that tragedy."
Act Inspt Bishop said speed was one of the factors under investigation given the extensive damage to the car.
"Speed is certainly one of the primary factors that we'll be looking at in relation to this coroner's report," he said.
Act Inspt Bishop said the crash was a tragic set of circumstances for all involved, especially a young man who had his whole life in front of him.
"It's tragic for him, it's tragic for his immediate family and it's also certainly always distressing for the emergency services workers who have to respond," he said.
Police are also appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage from around the area at the time to come forward.
EARLIER: A TEENAGER has died at the scene of a single-vehicle traffic crash early this morning.
A police spokesman said the 19-year-old was travelling along Mittelheuser Rd from Mon Repos towards Burnett Heads when his silver Mazda 3 left the road and smashed head-on into the only gum tree on that section of road.
The impact of the crash was that severe it pushed the engine of the vehicle into the cabin.
The crash happened just after midnight.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and fire fighters tried to cut the man from the car but were unable to save him.
Police say his family has been notified.
Police accident investigators are still on the scene.
