Family knocked down by triple cancer tragedy

FAMILY, friends and a generous community are rallying behind a family hit by the worst triple whammy imaginable - three bouts of cancer within six months.

Peregian sisters Grace Fahey, 33, and Amye Moriarty, 31, are presently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer while their mum Anne Fahey of Albury was diagnosed with ovarian cancer earlier this year.

Grace said all three have the BRCA1 gene mutation that makes them susceptible to breast cancer and they are keen to raise awareness of the rogue condition and the importance having regular screening.

The family trio are now locked in a battle to beat their cancers, with the support of a Go Fund Me page started by the Grace and Amye's brother Brock, which has already raised almost $52,000.

"It has been an extremely challenging and emotional time that we hope will be over soon," Brock posted.

"It started with our incredible Mum. After multiple tests and agonising visits to numerous doctors, she was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer.

"Mum is the most kind, devoted, caring and loving mum - who raised five kids and dedicated her life to her family," he said.

Despite six rounds of chemo, "losing her hair and enduring a major surgery" the cancer is still in her system.

"But cancer doesn't know our Mum. Mum is incredibly tough. For now she is on a new drug that is keeping the cancer at bay, but she needs alternative (expensive) therapies to help to beat this cancer," he said.

"Through this ordeal she has stayed strong and positive. We are so proud of her."

Three months after Anne was diagnosed, Amye was received her bad news three days before her son Luca's first birthday.

"Amye is the jolliest, bubbliest and biggest lover of life you could ever meet.

"Four weeks after this we are hit with a third blow. Our eldest sister, Grace is diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Grace is someone you always want to be around because she brings the warmest energy where ever she goes."

Brock describes his big sister as the rock of the family and she'll need to summon her deepest stores of resilience as the treatment takes a sapping toll.

"Both Grace and Amye's chemotherapy regime is weekly and intense with radiation to follow. They also face the prospect of having major surgeries post chemo."

"There is still a long road to go for all three of them but they are doing it together. They are staying strong and positive through the help of yoga, chai lattes, family and the support of this incredible community that is all of you," Brock said.

"We truly can't thank everyone enough for the generosity, thoughts and prayers."
