Corella shooting range plan is ‘popular from the ground up’
GYMPIE Region sports shooters are right behind the Cooloola Range Complex proposal, which would provide facilities for the full range of shooting sports.
"We have a lot of members in that area," Shooters Union of Queensland president Graham Park said.
Mr Park joined the call for Gympie Regional Council to get on with the job of preparing a lease of land, which the state government has already agreed to make available.
"This is a groundswell," Mr Park said. "We're finding it's being driven by our members, which is where the strength comes from."
He said the council should stop acting as though shooters have not been consulted.
"I think this whole range thing is being driven by local demand.
"It's being driven very much in a ground-up, say, not by any particular organisation.
"It's really going to be used by local people. That will be its bread and butter.
"Not everyone's going to drive up from Brisbane.
"Your range though would be very strongly supported by people in your readership area," he told The Gympie Times. "They're the ones who are driving it and I believe that is exactly what would make it work."
Referring to council plans to consult the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, Mr Park said: "It's not one organisation saying 'it's our baby.' It's shooters."
"There could be as many as 15 or 20 different disciplines eventually using this facility," he said.
