Council branches out with Christmas tree

GYMPIE'S Christmas tree came down yesterday, bringing to an end its inaugural festive season at its new home in Monkland St.

After 14 Christmases presiding over the roundabout at the Gympie Fiveways near Town Hall, the Gympie Regional Council relocated the tree to what it described as somewhere "that will be viewed by more residents" - adjacent to the new roundabout near Nelson Reserve.

It's a decision Mayor Ron Dyne remained happy with yesterday as it was far less disruptive and cheaper than installing the tree at the Fiveways.

But Cr Dyne said he would seek this year to have a mature, permanent, growing "Christmas" tree planted at the Monkland St roundabout, or, if that proved impossible, the council would "bulk out" the existing artificial tree and take it down to ground level.
