Council chasing govt sport cash
THREE major Gympie sporting facilities could jag more than $650,000 in new lighting and other improvements under Queensland Government Sport and Recreation funding.
Gympie Regional Council this week set aside more than $130,000 to meet its end of the bargain should the funding come through.
A condition of securing the grants is that the council pays 20% of the cost of the projects.
The Gympie BMX Club at One Mile Ovals is chasing $115,500 to build a new six-metre start ramp and gate at the track, and to upgrade lighting there.
Gympie Touch Association wants $126,600 to upgrade the lighting on touch fields one and two at Albert Park, and Gympie Junior Rugby League Club needs $141,000 to upgrade existing lighting and install new lighting at the training area at Jack Stokes Oval.
The deteriorating reliability of the lighting there has caused play to stop at more than one night game there this year.
The Gympie Recreation Association needs $86,600 to upgrade lighting at the cricket practice wickets and at the western end of the top oval at Albert Park.
Gympie Junior Cricket wants $87,500 to build a new wicket block and two sight screens at Jack Ison Oval, and One Mile Sports Association needs $96,000 to upgrade the lighting at Jim Geiger Oval.
An expected influx of competitive funding applications from throughout the state for other regional, council-maintained sporting facilities is expected to ensure not all of Gympie's facilities will get the money they want.
But as each application needs the commitment of 20% from the council, the money has been allocated.
The council said it was happy to do this because of the high return on any money it was prepared to invest.
Councillor Mick Curran said that with numbers waning in sports such as cricket and touch football, providing better lighting and facilities for night games was "a very good thing".
