Audi ouch! Car transporter slams into bridge

TWO cars were shunted off the back of a truck and another was badly damaged when a driver failed to correctly judge the height of an overbridge in Oamaru in New Zealand today.

Police said the double-decker car transporter slammed into the bridge on Humber St about 12.30pm.

"He just got it wrong,'' Oamaru Constable Dean Paterson said of the driver.

The rail bridge allows vehicles up to 3.5 metres tall to pass under it, but Mr Paterson estimated this truck and its load would have been about 4 metres.

The bridge appeared undamaged and the crash scene was cleared by 1.30pm, but a black car wedged between the truck and the bridge was seriously damaged.

A grey 4WD that was shunted off first had damage to its rear, as did a blue car that fell from the truck's top deck.

Two cars on the lower deck emerged unscathed, as was the truck driver.

Mr Paterson said it was too early to say if he would be prosecuted.

"We'll have to just make some further inquires and make the decision whether charges will follow or not.''

Mr Paterson said there had been similar incidents at the same spot, which was in a 50km/h zone.
