Drinkers pour their own at innovative new bar

WE HAVE self-service checkouts, petrol pumps and buffets - so why not bars?

Mooloolaba will host Australia's first bar where customers looking to wet their whistle will be able to pull the beers themselves straight from the tap.

Taps @ Mooloolaba owner Steven Barber predicted the concept would become a big fad.

He is currently busy with construction at the new venue, on the corner of The Esplanade and Brisbane Rd, and preparing for the grand opening a week from now.

"Taps is an exciting new concept for Australia," Mr Barber said.

"I am thrilled to be bringing this idea to the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

"I'm overwhelmed by the support and response that locals have shown.

"I'm keen for Taps to be heavily involved in the wider community."

The venue will have 28 beer taps flowing around the bar, set into the tables and off the walls..

It will operate on a rechargeable credit system, known as an iButton, that allows customers to pour their own beer at their own pace.

Mr Barber said the documentation to make the concept legal and in line with Responsible Service of Alcohol requirements had taken years to organise.

"I'm hoping this is the new trend," he said.

"I'm just pumped to get it open. We've already got people poking their head in the door to see what we're up to."

Mr Barber said Taps could employ up to 30 people once it opens.

Taps also will deliver a cocktail menu, a fine wine list and a fresh local produce share-plate menu.
