Driver comes back to earth with a ‘thump’

Q. Firstly Brad, what got you into the sport of speedway and how old were you when you started?

A. My dad always loved speedway and raced himself, so he really gave me a passion for it.

I started racing (when) I was 12 and I have loved it ever since.

Q. White type of sedan do you race?

A. I currently race modified sedans but this is my first year, I was driving street sedans before this.

Q. Why make the change from street to modified sedans?

A. Modified gives you way more opportunities to race and also you can adjust your car so I really wanted to give it a try.

Q. How did you go in your first Australian Modified Sedan title at the weekend?

A. Not too good, in my first heat I had a rollover and I wasn't able to finish the race.

The car did a complete flip in the air and ended up upside down.

Q. How did it feel to be "flying"?

A. It was pretty adrenaline pumping, I felt the car starting to tip and suddenly I was in mid air, it seemed like ages before the huge thump of landing finally arrived.

Q. Was it your first crash?

A. Yeah it was my first big accident and I think I was pretty lucky to escape with only bruises and some scratches.

I got out of the upside-down car afterwards pretty dazed, it all happened so fast and it took me a while to realise what actually happened.

Q. What happened to the car?

A. The car is a complete write-off, it got way more damaged than me in the accident.

The car did two-and-a-half flips before landing so it really got smashed up.

Q. Rumours have it you're now a YouTube sensation with the video of the rollover going viral, how do you feel about that?

A. I think it's pretty sweet, the video currently has around 2500 views.

Funnily enough the first thing I said when I got out of the car was I hope somebody got that on video.

When I look back at the video on YouTube it feels surreal that I was really in it and didn't get badly hurt.

Q. With the Queensland titles coming up this weekend, will you be able to race?

A. Unfortunately I won't be able to race in this weekend's title. I was really looking forward to contesting both the Australian and Queensland title in the same month but I guess that will need to wait until next year.

Q. What's next for your speedway career?

A. I'm currently building another modified sedan so I hope to race at the beginning of next season.

The season starts in Septembers and hopefully next year I can make it a couple more rounds in the Australian championships and really give it a go.

Q. Is there anybody you would like to thank?

A. Yeah I would like to thank my family for giving me so much support throughout the season.

Without them I don't think I would have come so far in the sport I now love.
