GREEN hats dominated the hotly-contested fashions on the field preceding at Corbould Park today.

Proving the fashion is just as showstopping as the major race, a small crowd gathered to watch the awards unfold.

Melbourne's Douglas Travis and Gympie's Helen Strong caught the eye of the judges, with both donning green hats to claim the mens and women's categories.

"My shoes were custom-made from New Zealand. I had this lovely pheasant feather tie and cufflinks from my wife," Mr Travis said.

"It's a great day here, about our fourth time up. Flemington is old hat, it's more fun up here, a good old race day."

Ms Strong, a schoolteacher from Gympie, had been up since the crack of dawn but only put on her dress in the carpark.

"I couldn't wrinkle the front of the dress so I had to change outside," the 32-year-old said.

"I don't come for the races. I come for the fashion and I have made beautiful friendships over the years, that's what it's about for me."

Judge Jarrod Woodgate, of The Bachelor fame, said all the contestants were magnificently dressed.
