Gillard and Newman talk turkey

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has met with Premier Campbell Newman a week after Labor's trouncing in the disastrous Queensland election, declaring the poll was fought on state issues but had federal implications.

Ms Gillard held talks with Mr Newman after flying to Brisbane on Saturday to tout the benefits of the national broadband Network at a Brisbane factory.

She said it was incumbent on Labor to get out in Queensland and put its vision for the state's future, including sharing the benefits of the mining boom.

''I am here in Queensland one week after what was a very bad defeat for Labor in the state election. The state election turned on state issues. Of course there are federal consequences in that there is a new premier in this state,'' the prime minister told reporters.

Ms Gillard said people rightly wanted to see their leaders work together to get things done.
