Girl Guides need more leaders
GYMPIE Girl Guides is seeking more leaders.
Although a team of dedicated women already lead the different age group units, spokeswoman Leonora Cox said they would love to have more on board, to not only relieve some of the hard working leaders from time to time, but also because more leaders would open up more opportunities for the girls.
The association had been touting for leaders through school newsletters, but are now spreading the net wider, with older women also asked to consider being leaders.
"Age is definitely no barrier to being a leader," Leonora said.
"And because there are different meeting days for different age groups, a prospective leader can choose which unit they would feel more comfortable with."
"Being a leader is really good for people who study child care for example, as it gives them experience with young girls and youth work.
"Of course, we hope they like it so much, they stay on and experience the joy of watching young girls develop into young women."
Traditional skills, such as outdoor adventure which includes camping, damper cooking and even toasting marshmallows, as well as physical skills such as abseiling, canoeing and more; are combined with helping young girls become valued community members, developing relationship skills and more.
"Guiding is about having fun, making friends, learning skills and being part of the wider community, Leonora said.
"Our motto is 'empowering girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible, community members'."
Full training on all aspects of becoming a leader is provided, including getting a blue card.
"We are looking for women who like the idea of helping girls achieve," she said.
"It will be an exciting year, with plenty of outdoor activities, community involvement, leadership development, arts and crafts, camping, music, cooking, and much more," Leonora said.
"In fact, any ideas the girls have, our leaders will do their best to implement. There are badges to earn too if that's what you want to do.
"You will find there's a lot more to Guides than you realise."
