Gympie bowlers knock over Burnett batsmen

CAPTAIN Nathaniel Bailey and Connor Franz spearheaded a convincing Gympie win over Central Burnett in their recent Wide Bay Cricket Association under-12 clash.

Franz made an unbeaten 30 and took three wickets and Bailey claimed 5/15 off eight overs in the round three game played at Gayndah.

After being sent in to bat, Gympie started strongly with Franz and fellow opener Sam O'Neil both reaching 30 before being forced to retire after facing their allotted 75 balls.

Jona Verrills then piled on another 31 before retiring.

Some handy contributions from those down the order steered Gympie to an imposing 6/204 off from 40 overs.

In reply, Central Burnett struggled early to combat the pace of opening bowlers Ollie Bembrick (0/5) and Jake Millard (1/9).

Bailey then joined the attack, ripping through the top order to claim 3/8 in his first four overs and leave Central Burnett floundering at 3/28 after just 12 overs.

When the Burnett captain (22) fell to Verrills at square leg off a Franz delivery, the home side was reeling at 4/66.

Bailey then returned to bag his first five-wicket haul before Franz mopped up the tail, finishing with 3/7 as Central Burnett was bundled out for 90.

Gympie Junior Cricket Club vice-president and under-12 team manager Ray Bailey said the players had enjoyed the victory and had been acknowledged for their good sportsmanship.

"From the association's point of view, the credit the boys were given for their sportsmanship was very pleasing," he said.

The win against Central Burnett leaves the Gympie team with one win and two losses with one game left to play against Bundaberg at home in late January.
