Gympie boys to play Reds

TWO James Nash State High school students will run on to the hallowed turf of Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night.

Aiden Johns and Ryan Gear will be members of the Queensland Public School Rugby Union side that will play the Queensland Independent School Rugby Union team in the curtain-raiser to the Queensland Reds v Auckland Blues Super 15 clash tomorrow night.

Gear, at 193cm tall and weighing in at 120kg, will play prop, while Johns, at 75kg, will play halfback.

Johns said he may be smaller but he was pretty quick on his feet.

Both boys have only played rugby union because of the influence of James Nash State High School teacher Rod Jenkins.

Jenkins put the boys’ names down to for selection at a school carnival in Brisbane.

“It’s exciting,” Johns said.

“I have never played on Suncorp stadium.

Outside of school Johns plays football for the Gympie Fire and Gear rugby league for the Gympie Devils.

Gear is also a top athlete, having represented Queensland in both shot put and discus.

The boys’ match kicks off at 5.30pm, then they will be able to stay and watch the Reds (hopefully) destroy the Blues.
