Gympie karate team proves a big hit at Pomona titles

THE Gympie Karate Academy sent a 20-stong team to the Pomona karate titles held on Saturday.

The event attracted more than 130 competitors from all around Wide Bay, competing in various age groups and categories.

Eleven members of the Gympie team finished first in their respective category, including Jacob Nedwich winning the open black-belt event.

"It was a great result for the group, they should all be very proud of themselves," chief instructor Noel Turner said.

"The standard of competition was very high so it was an excellent performance."

It was the first regional competition for the year, with the next one set to be held in Gympie in May.

The club is located in Iron St, Gympie, with trainings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; juniors from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and seniors 6.30pm-7.30pm. Squad training is on Saturdays, 8am-9.30am.
