Gympie Times goes from strength to strength

THE move to start charging people for online news has had immediate benefits for the Gympie Times.

The Australian Regional Media masthead is one of the few in the country to have reported growing paid sales in the latest quarter.

The Audited Media Association of Australia figures for the April-June quarter combine for the first time newspaper and digital sales. The 1% increase on the same period last year reverses a trend of downward newspaper sales.

Editor Shelley Strachan said people in Gympie were clicking on to the fact The GT, as it is affectionately known, now had a dynamic website reporting news as it happened, and were starting to accept that was worth paying for.

''We've put lot of time and energy into making sure people in this region know what is happening first online.''

She said the website was complementary to the newspaper, and print subscribers got free access to online news.

''We've been named the best small paper in Australasia the last two years, and we are thankful our readers are backing that up by supporting our product.''

A digital subscription model was implemented last year and is available for just $3 a week for a 12-week trial, including Saturday's paper home delivered.
