Gympie's CBD a hot spot for prangs

GYMPIE'S CBD is the region's most accident-prone suburb, with 906 crashes over 13 years.

Rounding out the five worst areas for crashes are Kybong on 181, Chatsworth on 122, Southside on 114 and Monkland on 106.

Gympie Mayor Mick Curran said the region's council would spend $15 million on roads by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.

Cr Curran said the council was always mapping crash locations and investigating the sites of multiple crashes to ensure they received funding.

"There are many other ways that the council aims to provide safer roads and roadsides including ... funding ongoing programs to improve roadside clear zones on rural roads, to review and renew road signage and line marking, and to upgrade floodway signage to current standards," he said.

He also highlighted investigating residents' safety concerns and reviewing speed limits as key council aims.
