Why we need to support and bolster our volunteers
IT WAS jarring to hear this week that Mackay is struggling with SES volunteer numbers.
These salt of the earth community members jump straight in to help in emergencies and disasters.
They are the faces of hope when people are staring at incomprehensible devastation after natural disasters like the fires in Victoria or the cyclones we experience here in this part of the world.
With the level of bureaucracy now necessary to be a volunteer, I fear community service is harder and harder to fit into our increasingly busy and stressful lifestyles.
But this weekend, as we celebrate the people in our community who keep the wheels turning in good and tough times, perhaps we should consider how we can make it easier for volunteers. Not harder.
We can't afford to lose any more SES volunteers in Mackay
