How to conceive a girl in 2018

WHEN it comes to naturally selecting the gender of your child, all parents are absolutely equal. According to Kidspot's resident midwife Jane Barry while everyone has a 50/50 chance of getting a girl when you're trying to conceive, there are some ways to boost the likelihood.

Time your 'sexy time'

Try having sex two days before you ovulate, rather than when you're about to ovulate or already have. If you don't know how to tell, try using an Ovulation Predictor Test, available from pharmacies. Remember though, these don't indicate precisely when you have or are about to ovulate, they are like an early warning device. General rather than specific, with a range of around 12-36 hours beforehand.

Be assertive in the bedroom

Women who take a dominant lead are more likely to have a girl, or so they say.

Dairy a 'go- go'

Eat lots of dairy foods and boost your intake of calcium and magnesium. Cheese, milk, yoghurt, ice-cream, custard and milky desserts are ideal

Avoid fatty foods

These are thought to favour vaginal discharge which helps those boy-making Y sperm swim up towards the egg - so don't give them any help!

Embrace vegetarianism (if only temporarily)

Go easy on the red meat and put the salt back down. Meat favours boys apparently so consider some fish, beans, lentils and alternative sources or protein.

Berry it up!

Cranberries are said to help conceive girls, so grab a packet from the supermarket and get munching.

Important note: Gender is all about the sperm

Are you ready for some maths?

According to Jane women always carry double X sex chromosomes and men carry an X and a Y. So depending on which of his sperm fertilise the (X) egg then it's either a boy or a girl.

XX= a girl and XY= a boy.
