Want an office with a view? Pub set to go to auction
THE iconic Eimeo Pacific Hotel is for sale and goes to auction in two weeks.
Known locally and around the country as the pub with the best ocean views in Mackay, the long-term family-owned hotel will be auctioned on Friday, July 29.
Owner Don Stayte said the decision to sell the hotel was based on family reasons.
"The hotel may not sell at auction next week, but if not then, it will sell over the next few months," Mr Stayte said.
"We have decided to sell... not for the business reasons but for family reasons, as the hotel is still running successfully.
"In fact, we survived extremely well through the Mackay downturn and we are probably doing better now than six to eight years ago.
"It is still a viable hotel but it is just that, for the family, it's time to go."
Mr Stayte said the sale of the hotel was bitter-sweet as his grandmother bought the land and built the first incarnation of the hotel in 1932; but since then the family has grown significantly, to a point where it has just become too difficult to manage.
"It's bitter-sweet that it has come down to me being the last member of the family to sell it," he said.
"Part of the reason we are selling is because it has created too many complications with family members.
"It's hard to run a business in your own right but once you have the next generations and their spouses it just becomes a nightmare, which is one of the reasons we have decided to sell it now."
The land on which the Eimeo Pacific Hotel stands was first purchased by Jeremiah Armitage in the early 1870s.
In April 1880 he opened a newly completed boarding house and postal office overlooking the sea in the same spot the hotel now stands; however, in 1893 Mr Armitage was declared insolvent and the property changed hands a number of times until 1932.
In the same year, the title to the hotel site was transferred to Mrs Lavinia Walters (Driscoll), Don Stayte's grandmother, who demolished the boarding house and postal office and constructed a new Eimeo Hotel in 1934.
"When my grandmother got here she built a temporary pub where the car park is now," Mr Stayte s
"In 1954 she built the current hotel where it currently stands, which is actually a recycled building from another hotel she owned in Mackay.
"That hotel in Mackay was taken apart and pieces of it were moved out here to Eimeo and the current pub was built around that framework.
"In a way this hotel has two histories, one in town and the other in Eimeo."
The Eimeo Pacific Hotel is being auctioned by Ray White Hotels.
