UPDATE: Police still searching for man north of Gympie

UPDATE: 1:30pm: 

POLICE are still searching for a man who claims he is armed and was last seen in the vicinity of Bauple-Woolooga Rd.

The search caused the Bruce Highway to be closed for more than an hour earlier today, but police believe he poses no threat to the community. 

Police said the man contacted QAS earlier today and claimed he had a gun. QAS officers then phoned police who then located the car he was reportedly driving near Bauple -Woolooga Rd. 

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said if anyone sees a hitchhiker near the area to phone Policelink on 131 444 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000. 

EARLIER:

THE Bruce Highway is closed in both directions, north of Gympie, as a result of what is being described only as a police "incident."

The problem has been reported as blocking the highway at a point north of Bauple-Woolooga Rd and south of Strathford Rd.
