Juniors perform well

REG English Tennis Centre hosted the 2011 Gympie Age Championships at the weekend.

Gympie tennis coach Matthew Watkins said the tournament was a huge success with players travelling from all over south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales for the event.

"Everything ran smoothly and the Gympie players performed well," Watkins said.

In the under-16 boys competition Gympie's Michael Cross was the runner up.

He lost the final to the Sunshine Coast's Tristan Perham, 6-2 6-2.

Sophie Wright was another Gympie player to perform well.

Wright, with partner Isabella Spring from Bundaberg won the under-14 girls doubles, 9-5, in a round robin competition.

Watkins said a lot of Gympie's younger juniors played really well in their first tournament with out placing.

"They provided the club with some strong results and gained a lot of experience."

Watkins said anyone wanting to play some tennis during the school holidays should come to Reg English for the Junior Fun Tournament.

The tournament will be held on both weeks of the school holidays.

Watkins said it was a great way for kids who were bored on the holidays to get out and about and do something active.

Anyone interested can contact Brett Cottrill or Mathew Watkins at Gympie Tennis.

The tournament is for children of any level who would like to try the sport.
