Kevin writes a bloody funny song a week

KEVIN "Bloody" Wilson set himself a challenge for 2016 - to write 52 songs, or a song a week.

It sounds like a lot of work, but the year-long endeavour is just one of several projects on the go for the satirist and singer best known for penning the songs DILLIGAF, Hey Santa Claus and the Bali Belly Song.

"I made myself a promise, not a New Year's resolution, that I was going to write 52 songs," Wilson tells APN.

"At the moment I'm up to the middle of July. It's nice to know I'll come in there with 60 or 70 songs.

"It doesn't matter to me if it's a straight song or a funny song.

"What I've learned (over the years) not to do is date a song by putting in people's names. I also learned not to localise a song. If it's funny in Australia then it's got to be funny in America as well."

That universal sense of humour will come in handy when he tours the UK later this year and Ireland and Scotland next year.

But first he's touring regional Queensland on his Second of the Final

Farewell Tours… Perhaps tour.

Wilson, 69, always tours with his wife and tour manager Betty and his daughter, singer Jenny Talia.

"It's lovely to have my wife and daughter on the road with me," he says.

"But the downside is there are three sheilas in the car telling me where to go: my wife, daughter, and the sheila on the GPS."

When I suggest his on-stage persona would be perfect as a GPS voice, he chuckles.

"Wouldn't that be funny, 'you missed the turn wanker, do a u-ey'," he says.

"I don't think people would like a GPS yelling and cussin' at you."

Wilson has two litmus tests any new bawdy ballad must pass.

"My wife is the first one who hears the songs and if she cringes then I know me mates are going to love it," he says. "The second test is my mates. If they laugh in the right places then I know I can take the song anywhere in the world."

Kevin Bloody Wilson's Second of the Final Farewell Tours… Perhaps tour plays the Rumours International Convention Centre in Toowoomba on June 7, the Racehorse Hotel in Booval on June 11, the Warwick RSL on June 15, the Caboolture RSL on June 16, the Gympie Golf Club on June 17 and The Shed at Aussie World at Palmview on June 18.
