Couple devastated after beloved pet dog ‘Goji’ found hanged

ZAC and Kirstee Mazlin say they have been forced to move home after three "hellish" years living on a leafy Kuranda street, which culminated with the gruesome hanging death of their beloved pet dog.

The couple's two-year-old pet staffordshire terrier Goji, named after the berries because of her red fur, wandered onto another property on Thursday afternoon after returning from a walk with the Mazlins' housemate, Jayde Hanley.

It was the last time anyone would see the "human-like" dog, who loved food and kids, alive.

The property owner allegedly snatched up Goji, tied a rope to her collar and hanged her from a verandah at the back of his house, killing her.

Ms Mazlin, 28, who is four months' pregnant, described her memories of Goji through tears.

"She thought that she was a bloody human and she absolutely loved people," she said.

"She would wag her tail so much she would fall over … some of our friends called her Beyonce.

"She was awesome with children and just a really happy dog."

Sitting next to Goji's empty bed in his lounge room, Mr Mazlin, 33, said his pet staffy "acted like a person".

"She'd have one leaf in her water and she wouldn't take a drink out of it until I'd taken it out … she (was so fussy she) wouldn't even s-t in the yard," he joked.

The couple said they would now move away from the home they had saved for five years to build together.

"We saved for years to build a place here, a home, but now I am scared and I am stressed and I just want to leave," Ms Mazlin said.

Mr Mazlin, a boiler-maker, said he would be sad to leave the Kuranda acreage property he once loved so much, but couldn't stay after Goji's death.

"I think this is mostly a really great neighbourhood, but after what happened to Goji we just don't want to raise our child here," he said.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed a man had been charged with injuring an animal and had appeared in court on Friday in relation to the incident.
