Latest Alastair Clarkson apprentice set for top

STAR Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead has backed Brendon Bolton to be the fifth assistant coach under Alastair Clarkson's reign to be given a head coaching role at a rival club.

Damien Hardwick (Richmond), Leon Cameron (GWS), Adam Simpson (West Coast) and Luke Beveridge (Western Bulldogs) all served an apprenticeship under Clarkson at Hawthorn before being given the top job elsewhere.

Bolton (pictured) is on the shortlist of four candidates for the job at Carlton and is due to be interviewed this week.

Roughead said the man who coached Hawthorn to five wins from five games last season, when Clarkson was ill, was ready to step up full-time.

"He's been our forward line coach the last two years, so he's been very good for me and the group that we've got there," Roughead said.

"It would be sad to see him go, but obviously the opportunity, if it's there, he would take it with both hands."
