LNP win Maryborough
NEAR-Gympie residents have helped push the LNP to victory in the closely fought Maryborough electorate.
The LNP's Anne Maddern ousted independent Chris Foley from what was once considered "the safest seat in Queensland".
More than two weeks after the Maryborough electorate cast its vote, the seat was officially declared on Tuesday.
"It is a great day for Maryborough, as this is the first time that this electorate has had a member in the government for many, many years," Mrs Maddern said.
Her victory was assisted by strong support from residents voting at booths at Bauple, Curra, Glenwood, Gunalda and Gundiah, where she dominated the primary vote.
Of near-Gympie booths, Mr Foley won the primary vote only at Tiaro and then only by one vote, 184 to 183..
Katters Australian Party was a significant force with 4588 booth votes, compared to 8057 for Mrs Maddern and 6791 for Mr Foley.
After preference distribution Mrs Maddern finished with a lead of just 170 votes, or 0.7%, making her new seat far from a safe one.
