MasterChef Matt Preston has refined tastes on the road

HIS personality is almost as loud as the attire.

Journalist, restaurant critic, recipe writer and MasterChef judge Matt Preston has fine taste in food, but how about his cars?

What was your first car?

A Ford XR3i - white with red trim and a white leather interior.

It was a company car I inherited from my boss when she left.

It was loads of fun to drive even if it wasn't very butch.

What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?

A Chrysler 300C. What I love: its unique lines, which give it real attitude, the comfortable ride, the vented-leather seats, and the blind-spot sensors, which keep me out of trouble when changing lanes.

I think it probably suits my style - there's not really anything else like it on our roads.

The only thing I hate about it is that it is not the SRT!

What cars did your family have while you were growing up?

A Saab estate with an extra row of seats in the boot that faced backwards so you could pull faces at the driver behind you, a Lancia Fulvia, which I learnt to drive in and that I might have pranged a little when I thought I was in reverse but wasn't. Oh, and a Lada that was surprisingly fast downhill. The trouble was downhills were always followed by uphill!

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

People who don't say "thank you", even with a nod or a finger salute lifted off the steering wheel.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

Not really, as different trips are always associated with a new album or two, but '60s US garage, early rockabilly or some hard-core soul would be in there somewhere.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?

Depends what car I am driving but if it's any of the list below I'd be happy with Cameron Diaz, Layne Beachley, Fifi Box or my mate Jack respectively.

What is your dream car?

Jaguar C-Type, the current Viper GTS, 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL in pink with cream leather seats, and a Chrysler VH Valiant Charger R/T E49 please!
