Club51 journey down memory lane

THREE days and more than 300 people made for a journey down memory lane for former Gympie State High School students last weekend.

The gathering of former Gympie High pupils, dubbed Club51, was in town for a celebration organised by Kathy Walker (nee Little), Heather Schefe (nee Smith-Goodwin) and Linda Rosynski (nee Skyring), marking 50 years since those born in 1951 moved from more than 45 local primary schools to Gympie State High School.

But don't mention to Kathy it was a school reunion - a term she loathes. Instead, she prefers the term "celebration".

"We got so many people, it was wonderful," Kathy said.

The celebration started unofficially on Friday with a number of parties around the town ahead of the main day on Saturday.

Such a good time was had many stayed Sunday.

Meanwhile, a year book is being compiled and numerous pre-orders were received last week from eager former students excited at having their own piece of history.

There has been difficulty obtaining photographs of students born 1950-51 taken around 1962-63.

"If anyone can still help with lending us these for the year book we would be very grateful," Heather said.

Organising the celebration was a mammoth undertaking and one volunteers took to it with great enthusiasm.

Armed with iPads and plenty of detective skills, former students were tracked all over Queensland, interstate and even overseas.
