Modest Kross praises pitch for winning runs
BATSMAN Peter Kross put down 140 runs for Harlequins in Saturday's One Mile Oval game against Wests.
But rather than attributing the performance to skill or determination, he put the season record down to a "good batting pitch".
The club president gave Harlequins a serious leg-up to a final run tally of seven for 260, finishing on 140 not out at the end of the innings.
He admitted that 140 was an unusually high run tally to notch up in a one day match.
But he said it was just a good day for him on what was a quality Kozmynsky pitch.
The hard batting stint started after Harlequins captain Tim Kross won the toss for the first time this season and sent his team in to bat.
Peter Kross said Wests must have had visions of creating another Harlequins collapse, much like the last time these two sides met, when Rowan Bartley bowled Shaun Ringuet for 8 with the total at 14.
But that was the only joy Wests were granted in the field as Michael Walsh (51) and Peter Kross (140 not out) combined for a 133 run partnership for the second wicket.
A couple of quick wickets from Grant Weller (3/47), and one from Dean Long the next over, had the score at 4/150.
Wests must have been having visions of restricting Quinns to under 200 from their 40 overs.
But Kross and Brodtman (28) combined to take the score to 6/211.
Then Kross finished the innings with a flurry of sixes off Bartley to get Quinns to a healthy 260 after 40 overs.
In reply, Wests opener Graham Brembrick compiled 45 runs.
When he combined with Dean Long (35) in a 59 run partnership Wests were on target for an upset win.
Great batting from Jeff Mills (34) and Grant Weller (27) kept Wests in the game, but a steady flow of wickets slowed their momentum and Wests were eventually bowl-ed out for 204.
Best bowlers for Harlequins were Tim Kross who took 3 for 37, Luke Wheeler who took 2 for 37 and Joe Laffey with 2 for 36.
On behalf of both teams, Peter Kross thanked Gympie Regional Council ground staff for preparing a quality cricket pitch and outfield.
Kross said it contributed greatly to the day's play.
