New Jaguar XE priced from $60,400 in Australia

AS EXPECTED, Jaguar has pitched its new XE mid-sized model squarely in the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and C-Class price range.

Available in Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S trims, the entry-level 147kW XE 20t Prestige will retail for $60,400 when it arrives on September 1; cheapest diesel is the 132kW XE 20d at $62,800 and the range topping F-Type-derived supercharged V6 250kW XE S is $104,200. The latter will hit 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.

All come with an eight-speed automatic transmission; Australia misses out on the manual version available in Europe.

Audi, BMW and Mercedes practically own the mid-sized luxury segment at present, but the arrival of a "baby" Jag will offer a compelling Union Jack-waving alternative.

FAST CAT: XE S with F-Type-derived 250kW supercharged V6 hits 100km/h in 5.1-seconds, and costs $104,200.

The XE features Jag's new InControl infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen, bi-xenon lights, leather trim from entry level, electric seats, front and rear sensors with rear camera, park assist, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

Portfolio trim adds soft-grain Windsor leather and leatherette wrapped instrument panel; R-Sport brings sports suspension, R-Sport bodykit and sports seats; flagship S adds more leather and S branding, S bodykit, 19-inch wheels and Adaptive Dynamics.

The Rear-drive XE has both the good looks of its XF big brother and specification required to get buyers through Jag's showroom doors, and is also the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque.

LUXURY: Excellent cabin features, technology and active safety devices are standard across the range.

The weight-saving aluminium makes the XE history's lightest and stiffest Jaguar saloon, and with a drag coefficient of 0.26 it is also the slippiest Jaguar ever made.

Drawing on the successful design language penned by Jaguar's Director of Design, Ian Callum, the XE takes plenty of styling cues from Jag's larger XF sedan.

It has a coupe-like profile and strongly-sculpted bonnet for a muscular appearance, while its signature J-blade running lights are a recognisable Jaguar design element, with the form of the rear quarters also being inspired by the beautiful F-Type Coupe.

For classic Jaguar enthusiasts, there's a nod to the iconic E-Type with a horizontal line intersecting a roundel in the rear lights.

The new Jaguar XE is on sale in Australia from September 1.
