Petition will protest power cost hikes in regions
POWER bills will rise by more than 10% for all businesses and all farmers in regional Queensland from July 1, 2016.
Regional households too will be stung with another rise in power bills with residential tariffs set to rise by 2.8 to 4.8% in less than four weeks.
The decision by the Queensland Competition Authority to impose another rise in electricity prices for 2016-17 will affect 97% of the geographic area of Queensland. This increase comes on top of a more than doubling of electricity prices in recent years.
“This devastating decision will affect all businesses, farmers and residents across regional Queensland; from the NSW border, west to the Northern Territory, north to Torres Strait and all along the east coast of Queensland. The only area exempted from the hike in power bills is the 3% of Queensland around Brisbane,” said Jennifer Brownie, Coordinator of the Far North Queensland Electricity Users Network.
“However, Brisbane residents are not immune from the exorbitant power bills impacting on regional Queensland.”
“Regional Queensland businesses and farmers will need to absorb the double digit increase in electricity prices or try to pass on some or all of the increased cost of power to their customers,” she said.
“Do Brisbane residents really want struggling farmers to absorb an increase of 12 percent in their power bills for irrigation?”
“This affects all food, not just fruit and vegetables. Farmers producing the basic necessities of life such as milk, eggs and meat will see their power bills rise by 11 percent or more.”
The Far North Queensland Electricity Users Network has been advocating for the Queensland Government to DROP POWER PRICES!
“We need to send a clear message to the Queensland Government and the only way to do this is with the power of the people of Queensland.”
“Queenslanders need to voice their anger by signing our Change.org petition,” said Ms Brownie.
“We need thousands of signatures to send a clear message to the Queensland Government to DROP POWER PRICES!
“We need the signatures from regional Queensland and Brisbane because both are severely impacted.”
“We are asking Brisbane residents to support regional Queensland, as by working together Queensland will thrive not barely survive as it is at present.”
