Police address Norgate child abuse rumours, calling for calm

POLICE have addressed rumours circulating in the community about Shannon Norgate, a notorious Brisbane child molester, moving to Toowoomba.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman called for calm.

"It is an emotive issue and police remind community members of the importance not to take matters into their own hands," she said.

"As a community we need to remain vigilant around the protection of children so if anyone has concerns about suspicious behaviour they should contact police."

Strict rules governing reporting about the individuals on the Child Protection Offender Register prevent the QPS from publishing, broadcasting or commenting publicly on their location.

However, the spokeswoman said police paid close attention to the offenders' movements.

"The Queensland Police Service does not comment on operational matters which may compromise the safety of individuals or the broader community," she said.

"While the management of the Child Protection Offender Register prohibits the QPS from identifying anyone on it, the QPS will take prompt action against any breaches or noncompliance of reporting conditions."

Rumours Norgate had moved to Toowoomba started circulating on social media at the weekend after reports emerged the he was living across the road from Yeronga State Primary School, in Brisbane.

Police order he leave the address.

Norgate was pursued by a media scrum as he moved to a new home in Sandgate.

He served 406 days in jail in 2018 after he used a fake security guard uniform to lure children into a toilet and assaulting them.

Norgate is currently on parole.
