POLICE investigating the death of Lower Hutt woman Warriena Wright are examining a case - nearly 20 years old - in which a a fleeing woman fell to her death.

News Limited reported today that officers attempting to stack up a murder charge against 28-year-old Gable Tostee in the Wright case were examining a 1986 murder case in which 33-year-old tattooist Kim William Royall was convicted of killing his partner after she fell six floors to her death in a bid to escape him.

Kelly Healey was in the shower when Royall broke smashed the bathrooms door open and punched her in the face while throttling her.

Ms Healey then climbed out of the window and fell more than 20 metres to her death.

Royall was found guilty of murder despite not landing a fatal blow or pushing her.

Police sources told the Courier Mail they were assessing whether that trial may be applicable in their case against Tostee for the murder of 26-year-old Ms Wright.

Ms Wright died early on August 8 after falling 14 floors from the balcony of Tostee's Gold Coast apartment.

It is understood police will base their case on the fact she was in fear for her life and was trying to evade Tostee when she fell.

Police said neighbours heard a woman scream "no, no, no" and "I just want to go home" during the incident.

The pair met on dating app Tinder and it has since been revealed that Tostee fancied himself a ladies' man, boasting online of having taken home as many as 150 women - many of whom he met through the app.

Ms Wright, known as Rrie, arrived in Australia on July 29. She was there for a 14-day holiday and a friend's wedding.

After his appearance in court on Friday, Magistrate John Costanzo remanded Tostee in custody until October 10 and ordered police provide a brief of evidence by September 30.

Outside court, his lawyer Mick Purcell said his client maintained his innocence.
